To be perfectly clear, the technology behind laser scanning isn’t new. It might surprise you to know that before today, when you can easily get a handheld 3D scanner, there was a time when laser scanning wasn’t so easy to get and execute.

Laser scanning began simpler and with far less capabilities. As far back as the 1960s, it had its roots in simple cameras, projectors and light structures. That was before the massive leap forward in 1985 when its foundation was then laid in something called Light Detection and Ranging or LiDAR, for short.
LiDAR systems employed the use of highly sophisticated scanners capable of emitting laser beams that would then use shadowing to retrieve the required data from the objects.
And now, laser scanners have advanced to the point of using lights or images to collect highly detailed point clouds which are in turn used to manufacture a highly detailed 3D representation of the area that was scanned.
It is as a result of these giant leaps forward that laser scanning has now come to be known as the most accurate land surveying method in use in the 21st century. With laser scanning, you can now easily collect millions of XYZ coordinates!
How does this Process Work?
As we earlier mentioned, 3D scanning has come a long way since the days of old. And as you can imagine, while these improvements mean that the system has become a lot more efficient, this naturally also translates to it being much more complicated than it used to be in the past.
For a 3D scanner to capture your object or surface accurately, it makes use of laser beams, high advanced sensors as well as what is called an Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU). But that’s not all. In addition to the tools mentioned, a Global Positioning System (GPS) is also required as well as various electronic receiver devices and high-tech photodetectors.
It is only through the careful accumulation and utilization of these resources that a 3D scanner is able to then present the astonishing results it is widely acknowledged for.
